It’s been a relatively quiet couple of months for the Trance as I’ve largely focused on road riding, mindful of a strong desire not to land myself in hospital at a time like this. They’re not the latest version of Shimano’s XTR trail pedal, but I guess they’ll do. A change of tyres would likely be the best bang-for-buck upgrade given the state of the trails, but the current rubber combo is a good all-rounder. The Trance X E+ is obviously quite heavy, so it’s not the easiest process to do on your own. Every gram saved is one less to lug uphill, every extra gear means tighter spacing or more range. The BB does sit about 10mm higher, which is important for an e-MTB as you generally want more ground clearance for technical climbing. We’d like to see the power band expanded to make it more versatile, so you can stay in this adaptive mode more of the time, without having to scroll through the remote all the time.
